Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are going up, although slowly. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
