The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
